Coral reefs are experiencing another global bleaching event. Growing corals on artificial reefs could help save them
Miami Beach, Florida is facing a decline in its coral reef due to climate change. The reef, which spans nearly 563 kilometers (350 miles), provides habitat for various species and helps protect coastal communities. In response, an underwater experiment called the ECoREEF project has been deployed off the coast of North Miami Beach. The project combines natural and artificial corals to create a hybrid reef. The goal is to mimic the effects of a real reef and reduce wave energy to protect shorelines. The team behind the project is also working on growing climate-resistant corals through genetic research. The expansion of the project is being funded by the US Department of Defense. However, addressig carbon emissions remains a crucial step in protecting coastal ecosystems.
