NASA's DART spacecraft collision may have created the first human-made meteor shower

Rocky debris from an asteroid collision could create a human-made meteor shower known as the Dimorphids. NASA’s DART spacecraft intentionally crashed into the asteroid Dimorphos as part of a mission to test asteroid deflection technology. The impact successfully changed Dimorphos’ motion, and astronomers have been monitoring the aftermath for nearly two years. New research suggests that fragments of Dimorphos could reach Earth and Mars within the next few decades, with the possibility of some debris reaching Mars within seven years. The debris poses no risk to Earth and would disintegrate in the atmosphere.
